Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I get community service or volunteer hours for my participation in MC youth programming?
Yes, as a Media Center Youth Leader, intern, or volunteer you can log community service or volunteer hours. Participating in workshops, classes or Digiquest summer camps do not count as volunteering.
2) What is the schedule for the YAC?
Applications for the YAC are due Friday, September 13th by 11:59pm. (To apply for the YAC, click here. YAC interviews will be held the week of September 16th, and the first YAC meeting will be Monday, September 23rd. The YAC meets twice every week (except on holidays or school vacations) on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:00-7:00pm.
3) Do you provide transportation?
Unfortunately, we do not provide transportation to the Media Center for our youth programming. Don't let this stop you from applying! Carpooling works wonders—check out Greenlight Film Festival 2012 finalist Brittney B. of Menlo-Atherton High School’s short video on The Car Pool.
4) I don’t have the funds to pay for workshops or classes, can I still take some?
Yes! No one who lives in or attends school in our service area (Atherton, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, Stanford) will be turned away for lack of funds from any Media Center workshop or class. As for the adult classes, we encourage youth to take them and if you volunteer for a full semester, you can attend our field production and studio production classes for free! Contact our Youth Education Coordinator, Katherine Saviskas to volunteer this fall: email@example.com.
5) What are the prerequisites for joining the YAC?
You (1) must be available all 2013-2014 Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-7:00pm; (2) must currently attend high school or live in Atherton, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Palo Alto or Stanford; (3) must be interested in and committed to working with youth different from you; and (4) you must commit to being involved consistently (every session every week) and being a team player. There are three phases of entering the YAC (1) applying, (2) an interview, and (3) committing to your YAC team via a contract that the team co-creates the first week. While many youth will be qualified to participate, we will only select 10-12 Youth Advisory Council members. All applications are due Friday, September 13th, 2012 by 11:59pm.
6) I make films or videos on my own or for school. Can I have them shown on the Media Center channels?
Yes. The Media Center will accept any video content to air on our channels. If your video has inappropriate material, it will be played after 10pm. Contact our Programming Manager, Becky Sanders, for more information: firstname.lastname@example.org
7) Where can I see videos that the MC youth have produced?
All youth productions can be see on Channel 28, our Youth, Education and Sports channel. You can also check out the Media Center Youtube channel, which has youth videos and community produced features.
