The Alliance for Community Media (ACM) held its annual conference in Minneapolis July 12-14. Midpen Programming Director, Jesse Norfleet, along with Midpen producers Joshua Friedman, Nance Wheeler and Sally Rayn attended. The conference titled “Rivers to Cross” focused on challenges that media centers are facing and how to overcome them.
ACM’s conference was an opportunity to exchange ideas with media center staff and volunteers from across the country. Attendees learned about preparing for their financial future given the impact of technology trends on media centers. Dir. Norfleet noted that the conference stressed the need for centers to become more relevant to their communities. Strategies discussed to achieve this goal included: tell the stories of local people and communities, provide access to training and services as media technology develops, be inclusive to the community at large.
One conference highlight was the Hometown Media Awards. Three Midpen Media Center shows won:
Joshua Friedman, “Afternoon Snack,” Children’s Programming, Independent Producer
Sally Rayn and Nance Wheeler, “Talk Art- Abstract Art and Technology,” Instructional/Training, Independent Producer
Andrea Throndson, “Abilities United and Dr. Temple Grandin,” Informational Talk Show, Independent Producer
Congratulations to the winning shows, producers and the amazing Midpen volunteers who helped make it possible!
