The City of East Palo Alto named the Media Center as one of their grantees for summer activities in 2018. This is the fifth consecutive year that the city council has given funding to support the Youth Sports Broadcasting summer program. The past four summers have been in partnership with the East Palo Alto YMCA. Twelve-to-fifteen youths will be trained over the course of a week to operate a mobile studio sports production truck – much like what ESPN brings to cover sports events. Following the training week the youths will cover one sports event in the late summer – probably a high school football game. Sara Bennet, will lead the project as she has done for the past two years, and she will bring in two additional trainers and a youth mentor from a previous summer training camp. The EPA YMCA will oversee recruitment, communications with families, and provide the training location.
After the summer activities, the youths will be invited to participate in year-round activities of our youth sports video coverage team. This will be a very special year because the Media Center will be rolling out its state-of-the-art mobile truck with high def cameras and video mixing equipment. The truck itself was custom-made for this purpose. The Sharks Foundation awarded the Media Center $100,000 to equip the new vehicle.
