Cards, Pasta & Bling—Volunteer Appreciation Party with Vegas Flair

By Eva Barrows

The studio was transformed into a crowded casino floor for Midpen Media’s annual volunteer appreciation party held on February 6th. The classic Las Vegas theme evoked an evening full of high-stakes excitement. Sparkling chandeliers hung from the studio lights over high-top tables with glowing centerpieces. Games of chance awaited stylish partygoers decked out in glittering cocktail attire. Chips begun to fly once knowledgeable dealers helped players brush up on their blackjack, craps, poker and roulette skills.

A delicious buffet of Italian food sustained high spirits with enormous meatballs, cheesy pasta and buttery garlic bread. The mixologists at the alcohol-free bar served up mojitos, piña coladas and Roy Rogers. As guests ate, mingled, and gambled, a slideshow of classic Vegas moments aired on the big screen and jazzy crooner tunes played overhead. Mid-way through the evening production manager Karen Adams debuted a collection of clips featuring in-studio performances filmed throughout Midpen Media’s 30 years. Talented and at times humorous Vegas-esque acts played on the screen, from singers and dancers to magicians and variety acts.

At the end of the evening, guests turned their chips into raffle tickets for a chance to win a grab bag full of swag. Then the festivities turned to the reason for celebration—our volunteers. In 2019, 164 people volunteered to crew community-made shows. Many volunteers stop by the studio to help out on a handful of shows, but some really make Midpen Media a second home through their hours of dedication. Jo Appogast was the top volunteer in 2019 and crewed a bonanza of 94 shows! Fred Bockmann came in second place with 68 shows under his belt.

We’ve hit the jackpot with our high-rolling volunteers and truly appreciate all that you do!
