Local Heroes – You’re Invited – May 20, 2017

Please join us for a reception and screening of Midpen Media Center’s 11th Annual Local Hero Awards, honoring the six winners, who have overcome significant hardship or made outstanding contributions to the community. Celebrate these unsung heroes and hear their inspiring stories! Congratulations to:

CHRIS BISCHOF: It was playing high school basketball that prompted Chris to establish East Palo Alto’s first high school in 20 years. He is the founder and principal of Eastside Prep, which admits only students who will become the first in their families to attend college.

MARGO McAULIFFE: A retired Menlo Atherton High School math teacher transformed personal tragedy into the pursuit of a lifelong dream and built a school in rural Kenya.

NORA RAZON: Nora suffered a childhood of abuse, alienation and secrecy as an undocumented immigrant. Against all odds, she earned a college degree and became a U.S. citizen. She now uses her own trying experiences to help others in similar circumstances.

MARGARET PETROS: As a child, Margaret and her family, Assyrian Christians, were forced to flee from their home in Iraq. She now offers – at no cost – aid to other refugees of all religions who are escaping terror in the Middle East.

MARLAYNA TUIASOSOPO: Marlayna came from a strict, poor, underprivileged Samoan family and is now the only Samoan woman in the U.S. working as an engineer. She credits her success to books and reading and has created Reading Bonanza in the Park, an annual day of reading, reading activities and book give-aways in East Palo Alto.

SUSAN LUTTER: Formerly a Silicon Valley Advertising Executive, Susan’s life changed when she met the famous “Koko the Talking Gorilla”. She now devotes her talents as a volunteer for African apes in a sanctuary in Cameroon.
