As part of our continued sponsorship of Reading Bonanza, Midpen staff and volunteers hosted a table, provided video coverage, and produced the Spelling Bee at the 7th Annual Reading Bonanza. MC Intern Michael Kim actually emcee’d the Spelling Bee. The event promotes “reading” as a fun family pastime and raises awareness of the importance of literacy to a child’s growth, self esteem and emotional well being. The event has grown each year. This year broke all records for participation:
- 893 kids registered at the check-in booths
- 2,500+ in attendance
- 10,000+ books given out to the community for FREE
- 200+ volunteers
- 54 community organizations hosted reading/literacy activities
In addition to the youtube link, the video of the Spelling Bee can be seen on Midpen Media Comcast Channel 28: May 28 & June 4 (4pm), May 31 & June 7 (1:30pm), June 1 & 8, 6:30pm, and June 3 & 10 (7am). PIctures of the event are available on the organization’s Facebook Page. Reading Bonanza is the brainchild of Marlayna Tuiasosopo, one of Midpen’ s Local Heroes 2017. Marlayna’s story is featured in a short video produced by Louise Pencavel.
