Nominate Your Local Hero

Do you know someone who

  • has an inspiring story to tell?
  • has overcome hardship?
  • has contributed over and above to the community?
  • would be thoughtful and compelling in a television interview?

If so, it’s time to recognize your Local Hero!

The Media Center is hosting the 11th annual Local Hero Awards and we are particularly interested in those who have had unusual, memorable, or inspiring life experiences – in short, those with great stories to share with the community. Consider this your opportunity to honor someone you admire and respect and also to contribute a wonderful story to the fabric of our community. We solicit nominations from the public and six winners are selected. Interviews with them are taped and then air on the Media Center’s local cable channels and on the Internet. We celebrate them with a big public screening and reception for the whole community. Click to check out last year’s winners.

We value your input! Please send us your nominations. It’s easy! Just email:
with the following:
1. Your name and contact information
2. The name and contact information of the person you are nominating
3. A description (a paragraph or so) of why your nominee should be selected

Winners must live in or work in/serve Atherton, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Palo Alto or Stanford.

Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, I would like to share the story of how our organization’s leader is working to inspire youth during these uncertain times. Elevate the Future is a 501(c)(3) non-profit run by high school students, focused on the next chapter of youth. Our program has 90 associates around the globe with 29 active chapters in 13 states and 9 countries. We make up the Florida branch of Elevate The Future, but we are just a small part of the bigger picture. We are a movement that’s creating the next generation of innovators, working to inspire them at a young age. Our organization has provided extensive learning opportunities in STEM and business through in-person classes. Ever since the COVID-19 outbreak, we have started webinars and free online business classes for youth stuck at home. Just recently, we hosted a 2-week business course for local Florida middle-schoolers. Like the wise Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can use to change the world”. With this in consideration, I was hoping that your news station could help promote our movement and elevate the future of children around the world!
Personally, Matthew is my best friend and I know that he works hard every single day, not just in school but outside of school, constantly helping out around the house. He not only spends his time constantly either working on extra curricular activities, but also found the time to create an entire organization that is trying to help kids pursue a passion, that he also has. It would be an honor for him to be nominated, as I know from anytime I call that most likely he will be busy working on another project!
