East Palo Alto Career Center Empowers Local Job Seekers

On June 1, 2018, the City of East Palo Alto held a community open house for the East Palo Alto Career Center. Midpen Media Center’s Board Members Marie McKenzie, Sue Purdy Pelosi and Barbara Noparstak attended the celebration. Marie McKenzie, Administrative Services Director for the City of East Palo Alto, recognized the opportunity to prepare East Palo Altans for careers not just employment when Facebook, Amazon and other companies were permitted to open large stores and offices in East Palo Alto with the requirement that they employ 30% local hires and she took the lead in establishing the Career Center.

Directed by Art Taylor and operated by Job Train, the East Palo Alto Career Center’s mission is to be a community resource that creates pathways to economic empowerment for East Palo Alto residents. The Career Center works with residents to help them execute their job search strategy in today job market (e.g. networking, elevator pitch, using LinkedIn and other social media tools to find employment); build the skills necessary to be a competitive employment candidate in their desired career pathway (e.g. interviewing skills, effective communication, workplace success). The Career Center will enhance the quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening the East Palo Alto Community.
